Good to know
Admission to the exhibit hall and grounds is free — it's one of the more budget-friendly stops on this stretch of the coast.
Inside the Exhibit Hall
The exhibit hall's centerpiece is a 3,500-gallon saltwater aquarium stocked with fish and other species pulled from the same mangrove estuary just outside the building, giving visitors a close-up look at animals they might otherwise only glimpse from a boardwalk or kayak.
A short interpretive video plays in the hall, walking visitors through how West Lake's mangrove ecosystem works before they head out to see it firsthand on the trails or water. Alongside the video and aquarium, the hall also sets aside space for nature-themed artwork from local artists.
Learning the Mangrove Ecosystem
The displays throughout the hall focus on how a mangrove forest actually functions — from the birds that roost and nest in the red mangroves overhead to the crabs and other small creatures working the mud below.
That ecosystem framing carries through the rest of the nature center, so a stop in the exhibit hall before heading out to the trails or marina gives visitors context for what they're looking at once they get out into the mangroves themselves.
The EcoRoom
The EcoRoom is the hall's dedicated space for younger visitors, built around hands-on activities and touch exhibits rather than just signage and displays to look at.
It's a regular stop for school field trips and other education programs the nature center runs, and it gives kids a more tactile way to engage with the same mangrove ecosystem the rest of the exhibit hall covers.
